New Blog - http://coolonlinesoftware.blogspot.com/

Working in IT Support, I am constantly having to try out new software. Occasionally, I will find free software that can perform many of the same tasks that expensive, paid software titles advertise they can do. This blog is a list of those cool software titles, with a description of what the software does, the website where you can download it, and the paid software title that this free software competes with.

Indiana Jones 4... eh, it was ok

So I just finished watching Indiana Jones 4, it was ok, started out a little rocky, but for the first hour, I let a few minor things fly by that I thought were stupid, mostly because I wanted the movie to kick ass.

Just when I thought the movie was going to be ok, some big ass CGI ants start attacking everyone, then Indy and his crew drive off a cliff onto a tree (which snaps backs to hit a few Russian enemies on the side of a cliff... -_- oh Lucas, you're so clever), they then fall down a waterfall three times (because the crazy professor said it in a riddle), and then the flying saucer takes off...

Oh yeah, did I forget to mention the part when Even Stevens swings from some fuckin branches with some fuckin monkeys! I really expected Jar Jar Binks to pop out and say "thisa movie sucksa Jar Jar nuts! I should knowa, cuz mesa Jar Jar fuck you in the ear Binks!"

To quote the AVGN, "what the fuck were they thinking??? This is ASS!"

All in all, I give it 3 out of 5 stars and that's only because it was an Indiana Jones movie, if it was a movie that was standing on it's own, I'd give it 1 and a half, and that's being generous after I saw that Indiana Jones can survive a nuclear fuckin blast by hiding in a lead cased, 1950's fridge.

Now I know that Steven Spielberg directed the movie and George Lucas only wrote the script, but I'm sure he's probably to blame for alot of the corny digital shit that was in the movie. I mean, his company Industrial Light and Magic and Lucas Films were involved in the project, and I'm sure Lucas is the kind of guy who gets on a set and screams out "I made fuckin Star Wars! Listen to me!"

Based off that assumption, George Lucas needs to realize that making a movie is more than just about making money, he used to know that back in the day, but now he just wants to make a movie that he can sell toys and other merchandise from.

I thought it was bad enough that he fucked up the Stars Wars prequel trilogy Episodes 1 to 3, but then he goes and does the exact same thing to IJ4. Nothing but special effects and a weak story line.

Check out this clip, it sums up what Lucas would have done to Lord of the Rings if he had the opportunity, and it is probably what he did to the Indiana Jones sequel.

GTA IV: The real killer...

I felt it was important to let everyone know that should you start playing GTA IV, you may be unwittingly preparing yourself to go out and kill the cops. You know, like the average gamer is wont to do.

CNN Shirts

I'm not making this up. If you go to CNN's website, there's a little T-shirt icon next to some of the headlines. You can seriously buy a shirt that has a headline on it from CNN. A little bit weird I'd think, though some of those headlines could be funny as hell.

Cuz my name is H. Piddy

Hope JK Rowling doesn't sue ^_^

Its sad, really

When a judge claims that the first Harry Potter book is too hard to follow, that scares me. Its a childrens book. Really, really, really. You can't follow a children's book. How did you pass the bar exam. Remind me never to get into legal trouble in the UK, my judge might find it too hard to follow my case and convict me.

Judge in JK Rowling copyright trial brands Harry Potter 'gibberish'

Interesting, apparently the judge for the Harry Potter case doesn't like the Harry Potter books, he thinks they're gibberish.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/04/17/wpotter217.xml

For a background on the case, wikipedia has a pretty good summary at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_Lexicon

I'm no legal scholar, but I have to side with Steve Vander Ark, seems to me that JK Rowling is just mad that someone beat her to the punch of making the encyclopedia before her.

In my opinion, I think JK Rowling should let Vander Ark make his encyclopedia based on his site, I'm sure he'll make some money, but probably not as much as she would make if she made the "official" version.

I'm sure people would want to pick up her version more than they would Vander Arks anyway... well, at least they would have before this trial started, now people are going to buy Vander Arks just because of the high profile legal case.

To me, this is just apart of capitalism, I agree that no one should be able to write a book with the harry potter characters or ideas, but she shouldn't try and take someone out who is making a reference book about her literary universe just because she wants to make one too.

Case in point, look at all the reference books that Amazon has to offer for some of the most famous movies/stories of our time:

Star Wars

Star Trek

Marvel Universe

Lord of the Rings

The list goes on and on, my point is, is that there was bound to be someone who would make a reference book for Harry Potter, why is JK Rowling acting so surprised?

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying JK Rowling doesn't have some grounds to be mad, but I think she's blowing things out of proportion, she's acting like if this guy releases this book, she'll lose all of her money and then she won't be able to write any more Harry Potter books.

I mean, I've heared she has more money than the Queen of England, what more does she want, world domination??? Is she the new NWO???

j/k ^_^

Some people say that Obama has an elitist complex because of his speech on small town America (which I think is dumb, it's just people jumping on another bandwagon against Obama), but I'll take it one step further and say that JK Rowling has been showing signs of elitism (yes I said it) with her idea that she can be the only one to make anything pertaining to Harry Potter.

Speaking of which, did JK Rowling come up with the Harry Potter concept in the first place? I only say this because another character by the name of Larry Potter was out back in the 80's that deals with muggles and magic:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/1224264.stm

All I know is, if JK Rowling keeps this up, I'm switchin to readin Larry Potter books lol j/k ^_^

Now I know that this post is probably going to be followed up with a rant and rave by ~M ^_^ But that's fine, that's why I started this blog, to get the conversations and debates flowin

By the way ~M, looks like someone made a book based on the Gilmore Girls:

Gilmore Girls Book

Strange that Amy Sherman-Palladino hasn't set up a lawsuit for Cathy East Dubowski for writing a book about how Rory felt when she broke up with Dean ^_^ I guess maybe Amy and JK should have a nice talk with a cup of tea in the JK Rowling mansion lol

People Lie

So I think I'm going to ignore my friend's movie/tv advise for now on. Everytime someone I know tells me a movie is going to be good. Blam it sucks! Everytime!

The most recent example I have of this is Lost. Started watching it around the 2nd season, then it got really bad 3rd season. I hadn't watched anything since the season 3 finale. So yesterday Mike and I decided to sit down and get caught up on season 4. Well it was the same old shit. More random stupid stuff. With 1 answer you get 10 questions.

Its okay because I'm pretty sure the Cloverfield monster is going to pop out of the island any minute now.

Olympic Contestant Plays Video Games

Interesting article, it talks about how the guy uses video games to keep himself occupied so he doesn't do anything that might cause an injury and prevent him from competing in the Olympics this year.

DDR fans need to check this out!

Stepmania is a simulator program for dance dance revolution that allows you to create your own dance steps.

Not only is this awesome because you can create steps to your favorite hip hop/club songs, but there is also a computer program that someone created that actually goes through a music file and automatically generates the steps for you! ^_^

I was skeptical at first, but the steps it creates for the light, medium, and hard levels are pretty freakin sweet!

'Violent Video Games Can Be Helpful' News Article

News Article: http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=174048

Although, I thought it was interesting that the 'violent video game' that they used in their research was World of Warcraft. Sure, there is some violence (if you call walking for 20 minutes a violent activity ^_^) but, you would think they would use an actual violent video game, like oh, I don't know, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, God of War, etc.

I mean, even ESRB rates WoW as T for Teens, how violent can it be? But I do agree, that playing a round of WoW (or any game that you like for that matter) can take the stress off the day.

On a side note, I think it's funny that people will attack games like GTA for being too violent, but they don't mind their kids playing songs on Guitar Hero that were at one time deemed pretty offensive. But it's all good, it just means those kids will grow up to appreciate good music ^_^

Tokyo in Tulsa - Tulsa, Oklahoma August 1-3

This is pretty cool, there's going to be an anime convention in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There aren't alot of details yet, but would be cool to check out since it's so close.

It's times like these that I wish Oklahoma was a bigger, more popular state, like Texas, California, New York etc. Then we'd get the big conventions and I wouldn't have to shell out the big bucks for gas and hotel lol

http://www.animecons.com/events/info.shtml/1331

Anime Nebraskon - Lincoln, Nebraska - November 14 - 16

Looks like there is an anime convention in Lincoln, Nebraska on November 14 - 16. It's still a while until the event, but good to know that there's something later on in the year for those of us in the Midwest.

One cool thing that they advertise is having a video game/anime concert. I'm not too sure on the details quite yet, but it'd be cool if it involves an orchestra/live band.

http://www.animenebraskon.com

Anime Festival Wichita - August 15 - 17

Not sure how big this convention is, but one of the guests was the voice actor for Krillin on DBZ, so, that's enough for me ^_^.

It's in Wichita, Kansas on August 15 - 17.

www.afwcon.org

Who here likes the Beatles??? Well F*** you, we're playin the Monkees!

Rock band is an awesome game!

Nuff Said.

A-Kon Festival - Dallas - May 30 -June 1

This convention looks pretty cool, it's apparently the longest running convention in the nation, I think this is the convention's 18th year and it is run strictly by volunteers. If there's a discount for volunteers, I might have to see about becoming apart of the team ^_^ (gotta save money).

It's in Dallas from May 30 to June 1, looks like they have alot of activities, I'll write more about it when I got home from work :)

http://www.a-kon.com/

AnimeFest - Dallas - August 29 to September 1

AnimeFest is in Dallas August 29 to September 1. I don't have a lot of details at the moment, but I do know that one of their guests is the voice actor who did the original Piccalo voice in DBZ (of course, since it's in Texas, I'm sure Funimation will probably have a big presence at the event).

Sounds cool though, looks like there will be a lot of cool things to do. Anyway, for more information, check out www.animefest.com
