So, I was going to go to an interview for HostGator today. Not much to the job, looked like your basic IT support job for a web hosting company. I was pretty excited, figured it would be a good way to work my way up to become a Linux administrator some day. Then I did a google search and found alot of strange things.
For one, anything good that is said about HostGator seems like it was planted by an employee or is only on HostGator's blog. For example, take a look at this link:
http://blog.hostgator.com/2009/02/06/bad-economy-good-for-hostgator/
The first few paragraphs pretty much sum it up:
"Every day I wake up to read about thousands of Americans being laid off of work. Unemployment is hitting new highs in America and yet I’m being forced to, once again, slow down HostGator’s growth due to the lack of qualified employees.
It’s almost as if America’s recession needs to be a full blown depression (If we’re not already there), in order for us to find the employees we are in desperate need of.
If you are a qualified Linux or Windows system administrator in America, on unemployment, and fail to apply for a job with HostGator, you should know that you are a leech on society. There are millions of Americans out there doing everything that they can to find a job and keep themselves from starving to death while we are here begging for you to apply with us!"
...A leech on society huh. Whoever is in charge of their companies marketing department needs to get a clue, I mean, why would I want to work for someone who insults me by saying I'm causing more harm than good by not applying to HostGator?
Check out this next link, sure it's anonymous, but it sounds like an employee who has actually worked for the company:

To sum it up, the cool things they have like a work out room, pool table, free lunch, doesn't sound like it's all it's cracked up to be. Plus the big brother camera setting seems kind of odd as well.
Anyway, though these are bad things, I still thought about going to the interview, at least for part-time work... until I saw this on their blog:
http://blog.hostgator.com/tag/employees/
All of the employees seem pretty scared, but the thing that convinced me to cancel the interview is when the CEO is acting like he's a disgruntled employee and is saying he is going to bring a gun into work to shoot up the place...
I mean, come on, pranks are one thing, but that's just stupid. Anyway, I'm sure they are making alot of money and probably wouldn't benefit from my contributions, so I wish them luck. But in all honesty, I sure hope I can find better organizations than this to go for in the future.
